Dr. Anirban Chakraborti

Dean, Research & Development

Prof. (Dr.) Anirban Chakraborti has more than two decades of experience as an Academic, and has worked in many reputed universities and research institutions globally. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (Jadavpur University), India, and later completed the Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (HDR) in Physics, the highest academic qualification in France, from Pierre and Marie Curie University, Paris, France.

Prior to joining BMU, he was the Registrar and Professor, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was also the former Dean of the School of Computational and Integrative Sciences, where he had been instrumental in making a significant and sizable contribution in building the School. Earlier, he worked as an Associate Professor at the Chair of Quantitative Finance, Ecole Centrale Paris, France, and a Lecturer in Theoretical Physics, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, India. He had successfully completed two postdoctoral tenures – one at Brookhaven National Laboratory (USA), and the other at the erstwhile Helsinki University of Technology (Finland), now known as Aalto University.

Adding further feathers to his already colourful cap, in the year 2009 he was adorned with the prestigious Young Scientist Medal of the Indian National Science Academy for his pioneering work in the field of econophysics.

He joins BMU with a treasure trove of knowledge and a plethora of cognitive experiences. He looks forward to enriching the lives and accomplishments of all who are a part of the majestic institution. His vast global exposure and experience, alongwith his knowledge and deep understanding of human behaviour, allows him to explore innovative and inclusive teaching methods. These insightful tools have proven to be very effective, and have greatly enhanced the perspectives of his students. He thoroughly enjoys interactions with students, and has a keen eye in recognizing talent and dedication.  He therefore passionately works towards moulding young minds and helping young Turks realise their full potential. His gentle and magnetic personality draws both students and colleagues equally towards him.

His research interests lie in the areas of Data Science, Complex Systems, Statistical Physics, Quantum Physics, Nanomaterial Science, Econophysics and Sociophysics. Gained great insight in his field, during his research years in India, as well as in Europe, Japan, Mexico and the USA, he has published several books, edited volumes, and research articles in journals of high international repute, creating wide impact across fields, as already evident by the gathered citations (above 5100 as per Google Scholar).

He was born and brought up in the tranquility and beauty of the hill station, Darjeeling. His early school days in the lap of the Himalayas, shaped his sincere and passionate thirst for knowledge, leading him to travel the world in his quest to learn more.

Dr. Chakraborti and his wife, Mrs. Anindita Chakraborti, have two wonderful boys, Arghya and Arhan. He may be a busy academic, but he makes an effort to take out time for his precious family and friends, enjoying good food, music and hearty discussions on the lives and loves of the world. He contributes actively as a social worker in the Sunaay Human Welfare Foundation, as well as the Sabudh Foundation.
